Principal Tony Habra Takes Position as Superintendent for Rudyard Area Schools

As some of you already know, I have accepted a position as superintendent for Rudyard Area Schools. This was not an easy decision. I love it here in Cassopolis. I have stated in the past and truly believe that the teachers and staff at our building, and indeed in our district, are some of the most hard-working, kid-oriented, achievement-driven professionals it has ever been my privilege to work with. We have accomplished much at Ross Beatty since I arrived, and I cannot take credit for anything other than facilitating the changes. The true changes came not from me, but from the teachers and staff.

What follows is an attempt to delineate those accomplishments so the reader can get a sense of what has happened in the last four years and where we are now. Four years ago the board started us on a process inspired by Dr. Pat Davenport. The board took this step because they recognized that if we adopted it, our achievement would improve. This process takes from many places, but primarily from Larry Lezotte’s Effective Schools, Total Quality Management, and the Baldrige Management Model. The 8-step process, also referred to as the Plan/Do/Check/Act process is led by two basic premises.

The first is that all the teachers will be involved in its development. This is not a top down model, but a bottom up one. The second is that achievement is everyone’s business. Although anything brought into the school will be shaped by the individuals in it, the idea that first each major challenge is met by the process is an excellent way to begin.

In its simplest form the process works as follows. A challenge is identified. The challenge is then researched and brought into better focus by using all forms of available data. This is often done by departments, department heads, administration or some other individual who is acting in a leadership role. Next the data is presented to the whole building and a plan to address the problem is developed. After that the plan is put into action. Part of the plan includes a way to assess if the plan is working and it is checked using that assessment. From there the plan is modified, again based on the data and re-implemented in its new incarnation. After that, it starts all over again and just repeats.

Every program brought in, or potentially brought in, goes through this process. It builds buy-in and consensus, and it has worked. In the past four years our ACT scores have improved at twice the rate of the state. Our writing scores have improved by 25%. We won an award from the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals for using data to improve achievement. This is not a flash in the pan, but true sustainable change that will continue long after I move on.

Because of the hard work, dedication and commitment of our staff, Cassopolis students can complete 47 college credits and never leave the building. These credits are in math, English, science, art, business, computers, and agriculture with health and PE being added this coming year. They can complete two AP courses with the hope to increase it to 4. They can be part of a nationally ranked FFA program, or part of 7 varsity sports. They can be part of a band that produces performances that in this past year were regarded as the best since I arrived. They can perform in plays that include members from 4-rangers to the staff and everyone in between. The opportunities continue to expand!

Our name is becoming known for what we do and how we have improved. Several districts, including Berrien Springs, Dowagiac, Buchanan, the Strategic Learning Institute (a turn-around company for the lowest five percent schools in Illinois), and many more have come to spend a day researching our Enrichment/Tutorial model because of the improvement our building has made with achievement. In addition, there have been invitations to present this same model at MASSP annual conference, the MEA annual conference, and the State Conference on Assessment, and we have.

Some accomplishments are measured by the physical things brought to the table. Most recently our district was named as a member of a consortium to receive 3-5 million dollars worth of technology and although we may not win the grant we were able to get one classroom pilot set up as a one-to-one computer class for mathematics in the 7^th grade.

The vision for these accomplishments stems from a board-driven, teacher-supported, district-wide desire to do more than leave no child behind, but instead to help every student reach his or her full potential so that when they move to what's next it will be as global competitors who never have to worry about working two or three jobs to make ends meet. The students will have the skills and desire to learn what it takes to stay ahead of the game and always find a new, high-paying job. Cassopolis engages them and makes them into life-long learners who will achieve. I am proud to be a part of this vision and was honored to work with the teachers who are committed to it. Our students will succeed because of those teachers and their desire to do what it takes to help them learn.

Cassopolis will always hold a special place in my heart and I will miss it, the teachers, the community and all it does each and every day for its students.

Jr. High Honors, New School Groundbreaking, New 7th Grade Math Classroom and Summer Break

Lots happened in the last few days of school. One thing that happened was the opportunity to honor those students in the 7th and 8th grade who excelled both academically and socially. Mrs. Hargrove and Mr. Shultz led the awards and it was a lot of fun. Several parents came in to watch and the students enjoyed some well-deserved recognition.

Another exciting event was the groundbreaking ceremony for the new school that is being erected on the site of Sam Adams Elementary. This new K-6 building will be state of the art and I am thrilled that my own 1st graders will be able to attend. Most of the students from Sam Adam's and Frank Squires attended the ceremony and many inspirational words were said. I was truly honored to attend as President of the Chamber of Commerce and speak to the connection between business and education. The true purpose of all education is to prepare students for whatever comes next, whether it's the next grade level, college, the world of work or the military. It is truly my honor to assist the teachers as they work to ready all of our students in the best way we know how.

Education is evolving. There was a time that the jobs that school was responsible to prepare students for were found in factories. Good money was made as a line worker at the local RV manufacturing plants or through Ford or GM. A person could expect to raise his or her family in middle class comfort and education reflected that process. Each student got a text book that had been printed at least a year prior to the student having it in his or her hands, and usually many years before that. This doesn't even include the time it took to develop the information, write it, edit it, align it to various state standards, get it approved by various state education departments, market it, sell it, and final get it shipped, a process that could take 3 to 5 years or longer. This means that in the old system, new textbooks already had old information in them.

It was a comfortable time, a slow time when teachers taught and students learned. It was linear, first students learned A, then B, then C, and so on. Students were taught in rows from the front of the class. There was a belief in education that if teachers taught it then students should have learned it. Teachers had to move on if they were going to cover all of the material, so they lectured and gave worksheets for homework. Rote memorization was the name of the game and many parents, who had time to come home at night and help with homework did so because he or she worked one job, made a good living and had more time to be available for those kinds of activities.

Those days are gone. Information happens almost instantaneously. Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia, is constantly being updated and has a better accuracy rate than Encyclopedia Britannica. Even if schools buy brand new textbooks every year, the information is outdated before the students ever open the book. Now, students grow up by getting the information they need without having to wade through what they don't. Lectures and worksheets, especially worksheets that come out of ten-year-old plus textbooks, cannot compete with computers, cell phones, I-Pads, mp3-players, the internet, You-Tube, online video content posted by television stations and backed up by toys in Wal-Mart.

To top that off, there are almost no more living wage jobs out there that come with only a high school diploma. The RV plants have closed, the car manufacturers are bankrupt, and the union protected health care has become outsourced to some guy in another country. Even those individuals who get those jobs find themselves back in training almost immediately because the position has changed and new skills are needed. Education is no longer optional and teachers are responsible not only for what they teach, but for what the students learn. The old factory approach is no longer viable and something new has to be put in place.

About three months ago I was introduced to a small company called Quik-2-Learn connected to Wayne State University in Detroit. Its owner/operator is a man named Jim Hare and he has a plan. His plan is to provide sustainable and scalable one-to-one technology to all students, specifically those in the Detroit Public Schools. That means the technology remains viable for more than three years (which is about as long as computers are good for, especially the ones that schools get off-lease, which means they are already two years old) and can be used to help both small and large districts. If students had access in the classroom to a computer, then textbooks become unnecessary. Sites like NetTrekker (a teacher vetted search engine all teachers in Michigan have free access to with computer based lessons, plans and activities), Gutenberg with 32,000+ free ebooks and Hippocampus with lessons broken into specific objectives are no longer add-ons to be worked in when the computer lab is available, but how we teach in real time, every single day. The information is current, up-to-date and interesting. The possibilities are only limited by the internet and the teacher finding the lessons. Those students who don't understand can get individual instruction while those who do can move on and not only is "No Child Left Behind," but no child gets held back either.

Jim Hare was putting together a grant for the federal government and was looking for people to be involved in his consortium and pilot the program. We have had some challenges in our MEAP scores from 8th grade math (which tests the learning from 7th grade math) and so Mr. Weatherspoon (our superintendent), Mr. Diol (our technical director) and I went to see how this process would help. We were all very impressed with what we saw, especially with the data from a variety of districts that started using the process in years past. Mr. Hare wanted to bring our district onboard, first as a pilot and then, if the consortium is awarded the I3 grant, the entire building. The cost to the district is nothing and so we agreed.

Last Wednesday, Mrs. Hargrove's 7th grade math room was turned into a one-to-one computer classroom. Cassopolis is moving ahead and away from the factory model of education based on past information and into a place where education engages students in real time. It will connect with students and how they learn, not try and force them into the model of how we learned. It is what needs to happen but what has always been held back by cost, especially for small rural districts running on a shoestring. We have gotten around it all.

The vision for these advancements stems from a district-wide desire to do more than leave no child behind, but to help every student reach his or her full potential so that when they move to what's next it will be as global competitors who never have to worry about working two or three jobs to make ends meet. The job they have may be moved somewhere else, but they will have the skills and desire to learn what it takes to stay ahead of the game and always find a new, high-paying job. We will engage them and make them life-long learners and they will achieve. I am proud to be a part of this vision and honored to work with the teachers who are committed to it. Our students will succeed because of those teachers and their desire to do what it takes to help them learn. The computers won’t change that, but they are a helpful tool. It’s a very exciting time for Cassopolis Ross Beatty Junior/Senior High School.

Track Headed to State, Winter/Spring Athletic Awards, and 6,7,8 grade Hello/Goodbye Dance

If you heard the sirens at 12:30 today, you know we were sending our track team to state at Jenison High School near Grand Rapids. 14 members of team headed up and will start at around 9:00 AM tomorrow morning. We wish them the best of luck and Mr. Weatherspoon and I will be up there to cheer them on! Go Rangers!

On Thursday evening, Mr. Guse and the coaches honored the athletes from all the winter and spring sports. It was a wonderful event and focused on the achievements of teams and individuals. A few scholarships were awarded as well and the students received the accolades they deserved.

Also on Thursday, the incoming 6th graders visited. They got to eat lunch at the high school, recieved a tour, were spoken to about academics, athletics, rules, and were able to ask questions. After that we held our annual Hello/Goodbye dance for grades 6-8. It was fun for everyone and special thanks to Mrs. Hargrove, Mrs. Ward and Mrs. Voss for helping to make that happen!

Berrien Springs Track will sponsor a Hershey Track and Field meet on Friday June 18th at 10:00 am. To be eligible to compete you must be a Michigan resident between the ages of 9 to14 years old. You may pick up a form and additional information from Mrs. Anderson.
If you need community service hours or you would just like to keep busy this summer, there is an opportunity to provide childcare once a week at Domestic Services in Dowagiac. See guidance for details.
June 8th is the first day of finals. The schedule will be backwards, so it will be 5th, 4th, 3rd, 2nd and then 1st hour. 5th, 4th and 3rd are the finals and 2nd and 1st are review for the next day. June 9th will be finals for 2nd and then 1st hour.
June 9th is the last day of school for the students. It is a half day, ending at 10:50.

Undergraduate Honors and 7th and 8th grade Field Trip

My favorite ceremonies are when we get to celebrate the academic excellence of our students. Today we did that by presenting awards to our undergraduates at the high school. Every department handed out awards to those students who achieved the highest grades, worked the hardest, improved the most, or any other category they wish a student be honored. The ceremony culminates in the Academic Achievement Award which is give to any student who achieves a 3.7 or higher for two trimesters. If they do it for one year, they receive a certificate. If they do it for two, they get an academic letter. If the succeed in getting a 3.7 or higher a third year, they get a pin for the letter, and if they do it for four years they get a personal plaque and their name engrave on the Academic Hall of Fame. Congratulations to all our achievers!

We also took the 7th and 8th graders to Dr. Lawless Park and had activities and a cookout to celebrate the end of the year. Students played kick-ball, volleyball, engaged in team building exercises, and went on a nature scavenger hunt. It was a great time and our thanks to Mrs. Bright and all her staff for the amazing food!

Hot Chocolate with the Principal, LCISD Career Tech Business Meeting, Band/Choir Concert, and Graduation Practice

On the third Wednesday of every month, I hold "Hot Chocolate with the Principal." Students who have issues, want to discuss the goings on in the building, have suggestions for policy changes, or just want to spend a few minutes discussing common interests with me get that opportunity. I also use that time to meet with the student government to inform them of new ideas and policies and get feedback. It is a very valuable experience for me and something I look forward to each month.

Another valuable experience is the earlier reported Ed Lowe/LCISD Young Entrepreneur's Day. during this day our students present business plans to local business owners who help them by asking questions and judging the solidity of the various students plans. This year, the top honors wen to a Cassopolis Team for an Extreme Paintball business. They were recently honored at LCISD for the terrific job they did and presented the plan to local business leaders as a group.

Our last Band/Choir concert of the year took place on Wednesday, May 19th. The show was well received with proud parents and family members right alongside the excited performers. My thanks to Ms. Goodearl and the outstanding job she did!

Finally, on May 20th we practiced for the graduation ceremony with our seniors. Graduation itself looked great on May 23, but that does not happen without a lot of time and effort from many people. Mrs. Bright, Mrs. Haines, Mr. Harvey, Mrs. Widerquist and most especially Mrs. Herwick worked hard so that our graduates would have a memorable day. However, even with all this hard work, we walk the graduates through the procedure of walking, standing, and crossing the stage so that they too can look and feel as polished as the families watching expect them to be.

Kendal Students, Seniors Last Day, Senior's Honor Night and Letters to Our Soldiers

Lots has happened this week, and lots more is coming up! To begin with, at the board meeting Our students who attended Kendall University after school with our art teacher, Mrs. Michelle (Shelly) Johnson displayed their work. The students worked very hard with most of them explaining how the class gave them the inspiration to continue on as art students.

Another great thing that happened occurred in Mrs. Mooney's class, and she explains below:

When I was watching the Country Music Awards an advertisement came on about a promotion called "Letters for Lyrics." A complimentary CD would be given to anyone that wrote a letter to our soldiers. They hope to get 1 million letters. I had 22 students that voluntarily wrote the troops. I had to deliver the letters to a Dodge Ram dealer to get the CD's.

The class also wrote a letters to Gale Sayers, former star of the Chicago Bears. He recently replied, and each student will get a copy of his letter. He

encourages the kids to never give up, stay determined and think positively.

"Snail Mail" still works!

On Wednesday we held Seniors Honor Night at the Elk's Lodge in Dowagiac. The site is very beautiful and the evening went very well. One of the presenters commented to me how she attends many of these nights and the one that Cassopolis puts on is by far the nicest affair. One of the announcements made during the night was how, to date, $479,700 has been awarded to our senior class in the way of scholarships. Special thanks needs to be given to Mrs. Michelle Anderson who does a wonderful job organizing the presentation and to Mrs. Robyn Bright for the way things looked and tasted! Unfortunately I was unable to take any pictures of the affair since I was presenting myself.

Finally, Thursday was the seniors' last official day. They did a great job and there were many tears and much laughter as the faced whatever path they have chosen next. I am so excited and proud of these students. They have my heartfelt congratulations!

There will be picture retakes on Monday May 17, 2010 at 3:00 for the soccer team and for any individuals that did not get to take their sports pictures previously.

If there are any students interested in helping at Monday’s track meet please see Mrs. Francisco as soon as possible.

Lakeland Conference Academic Achiever and Prom 2010!

Every year the Lakeland Conference Schools recognize the top 20 seniors from all of the schools and award them with a wonderful lunch and a beautiful plaque. This year Cassopolis' student winner was Elisabeth Mays. Her mother, Mr. Weatherspoon and I were there to support and we are very proud of her and her academic acheivment. Great Job!

In addition, last Friday was Prom and I was so impressed with the outstanding behavior of our students. Many individuals from the wait-staff came up and told me how polite and respectful our students are. Our students did an amazing job of representing Cassopolis and I am very proud of them.

The driveway area north of the softball field and south of the wrestling practice room should not be used for student parking until after the afternoon bus departures.

SENIORS: Please check and see if you owe any fees to anyone. These fees need to be paid before you can participate in graduation practice.
Seniors: The Julie Cox Fedore Foundation Scholarship is now available in the guidance office. If you have a GPA of at least 3.0 you may apply.
There will be vision testing on Friday May 7, 2010 starting at 8:00 for 7^th and 9^th grades.
Miss Borsa will also be having open gym on Saturday May 8, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. for any young ladies that are interested in playing volleyball next year. This is only for those young ladies that will be in high school next year.
On Monday May 10 there will be a brief senior class meeting during channel one. The purpose of this meeting will be to double check the spelling on your diplomas.
The AP Biology Test is Monday, May 10th.
The ETS Senior Trip to SMC is also Monday, May 10th.
Cheerleading Tryout practice is on the 10th and 11th from 3-4:30 in the Cafeteria, with tryouts on Wednesday the 12th at the same time and place.
Attention Thespians. There will be an important meeting next Tuesday, the 11th, during lunch in the library. Please plan on attending and pick up your pass from Lizzy, Robert or Ms. Porath.
Senior Awards night is Monday May 12th at the Elk's Lodge.

The following was written by Mrs. Brooke Hari about Young Entrepreneur's Day:

"On April 23, 11 students from Small Business Management along with students from the other Cass County schools visited the Edward Lowe Foundation’s headquarters at Big Rock Valley. There, they presented business plans that they had developed in class. Presentations were made to local business leaders who served as mentors.

Young Entrepreneurs Day allows the aspiring entrepreneurs to make interactive presentations about their start-up companies as if they were meeting with potential investors. Mentors ask questions, provide encouragement, make suggestions and assess each area of the plan according to set criteria and expectations. Their plans must clearly define everything from the overview of their product or service to marketing, operations, management and finances.

At the end of Young Entrepreneurs Day, each student receives a certificate recognizing their efforts. Mentors’ evaluations are tabulated later, and the members of the team with the highest score from each school receive a $50 savings bond. Students from Cassopolis that earned the $50 savings bond were John Hayman and George Samadder."

Ms. Jean Porath and Mrs. Erin Westrate also put on "The Music Man," and it was a tremendous success! Students from all three buildings as well as teachers and community members, some of whom were reprising their rolls from the same musical in years past, starred in this expansive cast. It was truly a fun experience and I look forward to the next production.

CTE Scholarship Winners and Ms. Hawkin's Science on Fire!

Mrs. Brooke Hari wrote me after the Career and Technical Education Awards for Lewis Cass ISD this past week and here is what she wrote:

Last night the following students received CTE awards at the LCISD. Josh Montgomery, Zach Gay, Stephanie Stickle, and Ashley Williams. Along with receiving awards, all of our students received $250 scholarships to SMC. Twenty-three students were recognized from the county, 10 of the 23 received scholarships, and of the 10--4 were from RBHS.

This is just another example of the amazing achievements that continue to occur at our High School and in our educational community. Ladies and Gentlemen: WE ROCK!

I would also like to highlight something fun happening in Ms. Hawkins' classrooms. This ambitious teacher planned and executed four labs in the same day, including a "blood splatter" lab for forensics! Another really fun lab was one that showed, in an extremely graphic display, how many calories could be found in a variety of foods. She did this by having the students light the foods on fire and then seeing how many degrees the burning food raised a test tube of water's temperature. I saw one group who actually got water to boil with a nut. They were very excited and were learning like crazy!

Need something to do this weekend? Thespian Troupe 2323 will be presenting The Music Man this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The musical is a fun and song-filled celebration of small time life. Cast members have worked incredibly hard to bring everyone a couple hours of great entertainment, so we hope that many of you will come to the performances. Showtimes are Friday and Saturday at 7:00 and Sunday at 2.00, with the bargain price of $5.00 for students, and $7.00 for general admission. Hope to see you there!

Honor Roll Breakfast, Fine Arts Festival, TEAM Lessons, and MASBO Solo Ensemble

WOW! It has been a busy couple of weeks. On Wednesday, March 31st we held our second trimester Honor Roll Breakfast. It is always a wonderful affair with some amazing desserts provided by Mrs. Bright and her hardworking staff. The numbers were high and we had the Executive Director of Cass Family Clincs, Miss Mary Middleton come to speak to the students on the connection between education and the world of work and the opertunities in the health industry. It went very smoothly and I was very proud of our students both for thier acadmic accomplishments and because of their excellent behavior during the ceremony. Way to go!

The next big event was the Lakeland Conference Fine Arts Festival. It was held at Coloma High School and was a full day and night of activities. It highlights the top students from the seven conference schools in the visual and performing arts. During the day the students attended clinics, saw a keynote speaker, set up the art show and practiced for the evening performance.

The evening performance went very well. The band, who was directed by the Notre Dame band director Dr. Kenneth Dye, did a phenomenal job playing five different pieces all of which were learned that day. The choir sang four pieces, again all learned in practice that day. The drama production topics were given to the students that day and in an hour and 15 minutes they wrote the script, created sets and set up (blocked) the entire performance. The art show itself had multiple mediums, including drawing, painting, ceramic, 3-D and more. This was an amazing day and a tremendous amount of work for the host school and all our teachers as well. The coaches from Cassopolis included Ms. Jean Porath for Drama, Ms. Beth Goodearl for Band, Ms. Julie Ghareeb for Choir and Mrs. Shelly Johnson for the visual arts. My thanks for their hard work and the fantastic experience they helped provide for our students!

We have also started bringing in the State Troopers to present Teaching, Education and Mentoring (TEAM) Lessons. Trooper Hector Llerena was in Mr. Shultz's room today and will be back five more times this year. We want to thank both Mr. Weatherspoon and Mr. Carlisle for their assitance in making this wonderful oppertunity possible. The students I spoke to said they enjoyed Trooper Llerena's visit and style so we look forward to having him come as often as we can make that happen.

Finally, I want to congratulate Miss Anna Bosler who recieved a rating of one in the Solo Ensemble Competition for the Michigan Association of School Bands and Orchestras (MASBO). She recieved it for her outstanding piano playing, but she also plays trumpet in our band. She is just one example of what makes Cassopolis such a great place to raise and educate students!

If you are interested in signing up for Driver’s Ed there is a sign up sheet in the office on Mrs. Anderson’s desk. The first 20 students that sign up with their vision test completed can attend.

The yearbook fundraiser is going from April 12th thru April 23rd. For every item you sell you get $3.00 off of your yearbook price and if you sell 15 items you get a free yearbook. Fundraisers are due 4/23. If you have questions see Ms. Aven.
On Friday, April 23, Holy Cross College is offering Spring Preview Day for interested students and their parents. If you are interested, pick up an information sheet in the guidance office.

Mr. Hood, Ms. Borsa and Strategic Learning Initiatives

Mr. Hood is one of most talented math teachers. He was the varsity boys basketball coach for us until this last year but then got the opportunity to coach his sister as girls varsity basketball coach at Brandywine and not only took the position, but was able to take them to 4th in the state! We are very excited to have someone so dedicated to students and their learning both inside and outside of the classroom, as part of our building.

Ms. Borsa is a superstar English teacher for our students. Her lessons are innovative, captivating, active and exciting and I hear about them and how much student's enjoy them all the time! In addition, she acts as our varsity volleyball, Jr. High School track coach and as the junior class advisor. Junior class advisor is the one who organizes the Prom, and Ms. Borsa continues to make it a magical and memorable experience for our students.

Both Mr. Hood and Ms. Borsa were two of the student-surveyed most popular teachers and will be featured later this week on a video that will be played in the building after Channel One.

Finally, Strategic Learning Initiatives (SLI) out of Chicago sent a team out to observe our PDCA, Enrichment/Tutorial model. This organization is one of 9 models that the failing high schools of the Chicago school district can choose from to improve their achievement. SLI came out to observe a process that is working effectively to improve achievement. They were very impressed with what we do and asked if we would present to some of these schools and host them in our building for further visits. It is always very flattering to be recognized by other organizations for the good work we do, and our teachers, who are directly responsible should be very proud . Not only are our teachers improving the way and amount our student's learn, but they are being recognized for it again and again!

Mr. Brawley, Mrs. George, the KIA H.S. Show, And Mrs. Francisco's Bday

Mr. Brawley has taught at the High School since 2005. He currently is teaching health and sex education as well as helping to coach football and acting as the head varsity coach for baseball this year. Any student who is lucky enough to be in Mr. Brawley's class (and at one time or another every student has to take a trimester with him) will be working with a teacher who does whatever it takes to connect with the students and help him or her to learn. He seeks out the need of the student and adjusts until they get it. We are very lucky to have him!

Mrs. George teaches agricultural science and leads the FFA as the advisor here at Cassopolis. Since these are both full time jobs, she works very hard. She loves what she does and she is good at it! Besides making it to the national level for FFA for the last three years, we have had state officers for the last four. She is not afraid to incorporate a variety of teaching styles and makes certain the students know not only what is expected of them but why its important, when its due and how to make sure they can understand. She not only is a great teacher, but a tremendous learner who cares about our students.

This week, in addition to our two highlighted teachers, we have a birthday to celebrate. Mrs. Tammy Francisco, the attendance secretary/receptionist/athletic secretary turned forty this week. The students helped her celebrate in grand style decorating the office and even putting a hat and noisemaker on my desk. The cake was good too!

Finally, if you have been a weekly reader of the blog, you know that we offer classes for college credit in art through Kendall University. One of the students who is taking these classes, Stephanie Vlasicak entered two of her pieces in the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts yearly High School art show. Their explanation which reads as follows, can be found at http://www.kiarts.org/page.php?page_id=102 .

This annual juried exhibition is open to artists 18 years or younger in grades 9-12 residing in Allegan, Barry, Berrien, Branch, Calhoun, Cass, Kalamazoo, St. Joseph, and Van Buren counties. Of the almost 400 entries submitted this year, 117 works were accepted into the exhibition by juror Karen Bondarchuk, Assistant Professor and Foundation Area Coordinator at the Gwen Frostic School of Art at Western Michigan University

Awards include five $100 cash awards and one $100 KIA Kirk Newman Art School 2010 summer class scholarship. A maximum of three Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University Portfolio Scholarships of up to $12,000 may be awarded for work of special merit.

Stephanie got both of her pictures accepted! Quite a feat considering only 29% of the submissions were accepted. One is a graphite drawing and the other is acrylics. We are still waiting to hear if Kendall will offer Stephanie a scholarship, but we are hopeful! Congratulations Stephanie!

Agust and I will be finishing some clay work for the FAF Monday after school. The final step involves the kiln and horsehair - yes - that's why the building stunk one day first trimester. We will keep the art door closed and the exit door open. It shouldn't be bad like last time when the stink wafted through the building. Just be aware that you may smell something...it's us.

Many of you have been asking about getting recycling bins for your classroom. Right now, the JAG class is working on getting the recycling bins. In the meantime, if you would like to collect paper to be recycled in a container that you may have we would be more than willing to come and pick it up. Just let me know that you are collecting recycling in your room, so that I can have my kids stop by to empty it when they do their rounds. Thanks! - Danielle

Science Olympiad and the Band Festival

The High School team took 11th overall at science Olympiad, out of 18 teams. We finished only 16 points behind the 8th place team that received team ribbons. We received a 7th place finish in Write it, do it, a 7th place finish in Anatomy and Physiology, a 6th place finish in Ornithology, a 6th place finish in Experimental Design, a 3rd place finish in Ecology, a 2nd place finish in Environmental chemistry and a 1st place finish in Egg-o-Naut. This was the first 1st place medal since I've became the principal, so things are improving. Congratulations to all the students and our coaches, Meredith Hawkins and Paul Chapman!

We also competed at Band Festival on Tuesday. I was unable to take pictures, except in the hallway, so that is what I have posted. Our Junior High Band (pictured above) received a 3 over all and a 2 in sight-reading. (A 1 is the best, a 5 the worst.) Our Senior High Band received a 3 in sight-reading, but a 2 overall (we received a three overall last year, so this is an improvement!). Congratulations to our great students and our director, Elisibeth Goodearl. Special thanks to Brian McNeery for his volunteering and commitment to our Band program as well.

Spring Sport “Meet the Coach” night will be held on Thursday March 18 from 5:00 until 5:30 in the cafeteria.
Drivers Ed Segment II begins Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday March 9 thru the 11^thfrom 2 until 6. The cost is $50. Pay the money to Mr. Wright on Tuesday.
On March 20 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Marcellus High School will have a prom dress sale in their high school gymnasium. You may sell your used prom or bridesmaid dresses or buy a prom dress at a great price.

Congratulations to all Middle School Science Olympiad participants. They brought home 3 medals and 5 ribbons. Great job! Mrs. May and Mrs. Wellman are very proud of ALL your hard work.
The JAG class is recruiting members for next year's JAG class. Any freshman or sophomore interested in joining the class should pick up an application from Ms. Dahl. All completed applications should be completed and turned into Ms. Dahl no later than Wednesday, March 10th. The JAG program is a great way to learn practical job and leadership skills while earning college credit through Lake Michigan College. Stop in and see what it is all about!

Attention all little league baseball and softball players winter workouts have begun: Every Sunday in March 11 thru 14 year old boys practice from 12:30 until 2:00; girls aged 11 thru 14 practice from 4:00 until 5:30 in the high school gymnasium
Did you know that according to the Student Environment Advisory Council. Approximately 1 billion trees worth of paper are thrown away every year in the U.S? In response to this, the JAG class at Cassopolis High School is beginning a recycling program at the school. Recycling bins for paper are now located in the high school and guidance offices as well as by the printers in the library, distance learning lab, and yearbook lab. Please take the step to become a responsible citizen and help make this planet a better place!
The next Board meeting is March 9th in the High School Library at 7:00 PM.

Thank you to everyone for using the new sign up sheet for the auditorium. To make certain that it’s prepared for the next individual who signed up please take a minute to turn off the lights and lock the doors as students have taken the opportunity to use it as a hallway and a hiding place in the past. Please be especially mindful of the house door on the kitchen/teacher's lounge side. The doorstopper on it stays down, and unless you flip it back up, that door will stay ajar.
